Imagine…

You are hanging out at home, with nothing to do. All of a sudden, the door bell rings. Guess who it is? An incredible drummer who is also a very patient, encouraging, and experienced teacher. He has come to your home to teach you how to play the drums. How awesome would that be?

Now Available: Drum Lessons To Go

We talked to some folks in Manhattan who wanted drum lessons, but didn’t feel like coming out to our studios.

“Would you come to my apartment?” they asked.

“Yes,” we said.

And, in those first conversations, the At-Home Drum Lesson Program from BANG! The Drum School was officially born. We’ve been bringing drum lessons into people’s Manhattan brownstones, apartments and houses via BANG’s At-Home Drum Lesson Program ever since.

It’s OK to be Lazy—-Order In!

We’ve thought about how much fun it is to sit on the couch and wait for the food to come to our door. We love Pay Per View, HBO on Demand, Netflix’s streaming service, and all that good stuff. Why do we love it? We love it because it’s easy! Since you can pretty much do anything without leaving the house, why not drum lessons?

Sure, you can watch a video. There are tons of drum lessons on You Tube that you can check out. But who are these people? Are they any good? Who knows? But you can be sure that the instructors at BANG! are good.

What Makes BANG! So good?

Well, for one thing, we really know what we’re doing. BANG’s founder, Mark Feldman, literally built the school from funds he earned by playing a drum solo that legendary RUSH drummer Neil Peart picked as one of the winning entries in a drum solo contest that ran in the pages of the premier drumming publication in the world, Modern Drummer Magazine. So, Neil Peart thinks that Mark’s drumming is special. How much better can you do than that as a vote of confidence? Not much. Mark founded the school, and no one gets hired without meeting Mark’s standards of drumming ability and teaching skill. And they definitely have to pass muster in the personality department, so every BANG instructor must be personable, presentable, approachable, encouraging and all-around easy to get along with. Drumming skills are not enough. Teaching skills are not enough. Social skills are required too.

BANG! is a very welcoming and friendly place. But you probably think that already, or you wouldn’t have read this far, would you?
So, you want to learn drums, you know we have the right stuff, but before you hire us, you have other questions too, right? We’ll try to address some of them below…

But What If I Don’t Have Drums At My Apartment or House?

So you’re thinking, “don’t I have to have a drum set to do this? I can’t have real drums in this place. My neighbors will go crazy!” Yep. We know. We’ve been there. Drums are loud. But guess what? This absolutely, positively is not a show-stopper. There are plenty of solutions.

Practice Pads –A practice pad is just a piece of rubber glued to a piece of wood. The piece of wood screws on a metal stand and then you have a simulated drum. You hit the rubber pad with your drum sticks and it simulates the feel and action of a real drum. When Mark started playing, he practiced on one of these pads for two whole years before he ever had a drum set. So, we can promise you that using a practice pad works. We know this from experience.

But, you just might get bored. And when we started learning to play drums, a truly wonderful and magical invention didn’t yet exist.

Electronic Drums —Yes! A wonderful simulation of a real drumming experience is what you will enjoy when you get your hands on a set of electronic drums. This is a fantastic invention for drummers (or drummers to-be) who live in apartments. Mark had a great set of Roland electronic drums at one point when he lived in a Manhattan apartment and he played them every day before and after work. They don’t make much noise, and the sounds that you will hear as a result of striking the pads on this electronic version of a drum set will astonish you. It is truly spectacular. Playing these will make you almost think you are playing real drums. They don’t feel exactly like drums…..after all, you’re hitting rubber pads. But the space relationships of the set-up are similar to a drum set, and the sounds are really good.

“Yes, but what will it cost me?”

Well, they can cost as little as $500 or $600 or as much as you are willing to spend, but it can definitely be affordable if you buy a lower level model. Playing drums at home at almost any time of day or night can be a reality with electronic drums. You have more questions? Yes, I see that you do.

“OK, but just exactly WHO are you sending to my house anyway?”

Ah, good question. But never fear, hopeful drummer-to-be, we won’t just send some wino bum off the street to go to your home. Of course, not! We’ll send him to get a shower first, THEN we’ll send him over. No, sorry, just kidding!! You see, we DO have a sense of humor, which is just one of the things that sets us apart from the rest of the folks out there who think they can teach you.

Rest assured we carefully choose our drum instructors from a large pool of qualified applicants. We require that our drummers have great credentials, references, and of course great skill as both drummers and teachers. They also must have the right attitude, which is possibly the most rare quality of all. The successful BANG instructor is ego-less, enthusiastic and just as excited about playing drums now as they were when they first picked up a pair of sticks.

Your instructor is going to be great. That’s a promise.
