About the Absolute Beginners Group Class
Drum Video Overwhelm!
You’ve never played drums before. You’ve looked around online but there is so much information; there are so many videos. It’s overwhelming and it all seems sort of random. Even the websites that are specifically made to teach you how to play drums have massive amounts of information and choices. Very few of these choices feel like they’re made for people like you–someone who has never played drums before or is just getting started.
This Course is the Solution--Just 4 Weeks to Solid Beginner Drummer Status.
Guess what? You’ve found the right place. Teaching beginners is my specialty. I’ve developed a curriculum that will guide you, step-by-step, from point “zero” to competent beginner drummer in just 4 weeks of class.
It’s just one 2-hour class each week for 4 weeks.
My teaching staff and I have taught more than 800 people just like you to play the drums using this curriculum at BANG! The Drum School’s NYC teaching studio. Now, after many requests from people outside of New York, we’re offering the class via Zoom so you can be anywhere and take the class. This is not a pre-recorded video course; it’s taught using a real, live teacher. And that teacher is me–Mark Feldman, the founder of BANG! The Drum School. And just in case you want some more info about me and my qualifications for teaching you, there is a video under the FAQs section called “Why Should I Trust You to Teach Me?”
Teaching Via Zoom Really Works.
When I’m teaching via Zoom, my drums are set up with microphones and several different camera angles so you can see and hear everything just as if you were actually in the same room with me. During the pandemic, many of BANG’s students made the move from in-person to streaming lessons. And you know what they discovered? They found out that learning remotely using this method is just as effective and way more convenient. And that’s great because now you can learn the drums from a professional New York City drummer without coming to New York City!
You Don't Need a Drum Set (in the Beginning).
And, no, you actually don’t need to have a drum set in order to take this course and learn to play the drums. I know that sounds a little crazy–but it’s true. All you need is a practice pad and a pair of sticks and you’ll be good to go. And if you’re finding that hard to believe–I get it. But if so, just watch the video in the “FAQs” section of this page called “But What If I Don’t Have Drums?”
In that video, I’ll PROVE to you that you can learn to play drums just using a practice pad. Just watch the video and you’ll see.
You'll Learn "The Right Way."
So, you see, this class has been “road-tested” already. I know it works. And as your teacher, I will guide you using all of my experience as a professional drummer and as a teacher so you’ll be learning things the right way. All of those stupid mistakes that I made along the way? Well, you’ll benefit from them because I’ll make sure that you avoid them.
And, by learning everything the right way from the beginning, you’ll have the foundation to continue to whatever level you wish after class is over.
You'll Learn to Play Pop and Rock Drums.
The Absolute Beginners Group Class focuses on the rock and pop style of drumming (it’s the style of playing most beginners are interested in), but the foundational information and skill you learn here will allow you to later learn any other style you are interested in.
This course is the solution to that overload you feel when you look around online. We’re not trying to teach everything to everyone. We just want to help, you–the drumming newcomer–with a worry-free, organized, and methodical way to learn the drums. We’re offering you a trust-worthy and proven way to start off on the right foot.
Welcome to THE place where beginners come to learn the drums.
Sound good? I think so too. Read on for more details.
Regards,

Mark Feldman
Founder, BANG! The Drum School
PS - I Hate Subscriptions!
I don’t know about you, but I really hate subscriptions. Remember when you could just buy something once? It seems like everyone wants to charge you every month for the things they’re selling you. The problem with that is that this kind of pricing isn’t helpful to the customer. It benefits the company you’re buying from, but it doesn’t benefit you. So, I decided not to do that. Everyone else is doing it, but we don’t. If you want to learn the drums at BANG you don’t have to rent anything. Pay once. That’s it. Like it should be. As Stan Lee used to say, “Nuff Said!”
PPS - My Story
There’s some more information about me elsewhere on this page, but I wanted to give you the “summary version” of my story. Not my whole life story–after all, I don’t want to bore you–but I thought you might want to know the “why” of all this. As in, why do I teach drumming in the first place and why did I open BANG! The Drum School? If that interests you, simply scroll down to the bottom of the page or click HERE.

FAQs
But What If I Don't Have Drums?
Right, we know why you’re asking about not having drums. After all, it’s the most asked question about the course.
Well, the answer, which I explain in the video above, is that you actually do not need to have a drum set in order to begin learning how to play the drums. In fact, most beginning drummers don’t have a drum set at all when they first start taking lessons.
But they do have a practice pad and a pair of sticks. And that is all you need. Really. Watch the video, because in it I demonstrate via a split screen how you can learn drum beats and fills while playing on just a pad. When you see it, you’ll understand.
So, wait until you’re sure about drumming to buy the drums; in the meantime, the practice pad and sticks will only cost you about $40.
Why Should I Trust You To Teach Me?
Mark Feldman–who is teaching this course–was one of the winners of Modern Drummer Magazine’s very first drum solo contest which was judged by Neil Peart. One of the most highly-regarded and legendary drummers of all-time, Peart was the drummer in Rush.
Mark has been playing professionally for more than 30 years, teaching for more than a decade, and he founded BANG! The Drum School in 2009.
Mark has played with Will Lee, Oz Noy, Marshall Crenshaw and many others, and some well-known drummers like Kenny Aronoff have great things to say about him (see the video).
You can learn more about Mark in the video above or check out his Wikipedia page with a Google search.
What if I'm Too Old / Don't Have Talent?
At BANG! The Drum School, we’ve taught drumming newcomers in their 40’s, 50’s, 60’s and 70’s to play the drums. Some of them hesitated to take lessons because they thought they were too old. It turned out that they were wrong.
Age doesn’t matter. What matters is that you want to play drums and that you’re willing to practice your new skill in order to get better. Age is–as they say–just a number. I got way better at the drums in my forties. Why? Yup. I practiced a lot.
As for talent, that is a myth. There are two books you can read about this that I mention in the video–The Talent Code and Outliers. Both books present research indicating that talent is made rather than inherited.
So, please don’t let the age or talent myths stop you from learning to play the drums.
What Practice Pad and Sticks Should I Get?
“RealFeel” Practice Pad (by Evans): It’s big (12″ diameter), has a great feeling rebound, and it’s pretty quiet. It’s my go-to practice pad. It is actually the pad that I play in the videos on this page. You can buy it with this Amazon link.
Vic Firth “Freestyle” 5b: Vic Firth is my favorite brand of sticks and this is the model I currently use. These sticks are a bit longer than sticks have been made traditionally. I’m a Vic Firth endorser but I don’t work with companies unless I love their products.

As a matter of full disclosure, BANG! will get a small percentage commission from any purchases you make using the above Amazon links. We don’t expect these commissions to add very much to our bottom line; for us, the point of the links is to give you a very reliable and very easy way to get the gear required to take the course. We want these little details to be “plug and play” for you, so you can spend your time learning the drums rather than trying to figure out what practice pad to buy or where to buy it. Make sense? OK, onward! If you haven’t signed up yet, scroll back up to the three classes being offered, pick one and hit that “sign up now” button. See you in class!
Please pardon this serious talk for a moment. We just want to make sure you’re OK with the TERMS OF SALE before you purchase your spot in one of the classes. And without further delay, the terms follow…
Except as covered in the 30-day Guarantee there are no refunds for spots bought in the Absolute Beginners Group Class. The Guarantee works as such: If you take the class and after completion you feel that the information imparted to you was not helpful in learning to play the drums, you can get a full refund within 30 days of the date of the last class. A sales receipt is required. Other than as specified in said guarantee, all sales are final. In addition, other terms follow. You may not purchase a spot and give it to another person; the class spots are non-transferrable. In addition, you may not defer your spot to another class at a later date; class spots are only valid for the purchased class dates. There are no make-ups for missed classes; you may not sit in on other classes if you miss one of your assigned dates. Sorry to sound all serious and business-like, but we need to have these policies in place in order for things to run smoothly around here. Thanks for reading. And now, let’s play drums!
My Story
Here’s a bit more about me. I want to tell you why I teach and why I opened BANG! The Drum School.
First, the reason for wanting to teach drumming is simple. I want you to experience the happiness that I feel when I play the drums. There is nothing in this world (except my family) that gives me as much joy as playing the drums. The pursuit of the skills and knowledge and the actual playing of the instrument have made me happy in a way that words can not express. And I’ve had drums in my life for many years, so the positive feelings from these experiences have been profound for me.
It occurred to me that I could share the skills that have brought me these positive feelings with others. Drumming has brought me so much pleasure; I wanted to see if I could help others experience that same happiness. It’s really that simple. I want as many people as possible to experience the joy of drumming. It’s real and I hope that you will get to feel that euphoria yourself as you begin to play and get better as a drummer.
And second, here’s why I opened BANG! The Drum School.
Having considered the idea of spreading the positivity of drumming to others, I knew I wanted to start teaching. So, I started looking around at what was “out there.” Who was teaching? What were they doing? How were they doing it?
The first thing I noticed was that many of those teaching seemed to want to teach all sorts of really advanced drumming. Videos of crazy drumming stuff were (and still are) everywhere. But what about beginners? Where was the love for people who had never played drums before? There was some content for beginners, but not that much. It certainly didn’t appear that the beginner was a priority for most teachers and schools. Hmmm….(strokes beard thoughtfully).
I thought I could do something about that. There needed to be a place where beginners were a priority; where they felt special and taken care of.
Then, as I was thinking about all of this, one of my good drummer friends invited me to visit him where he was teaching. He was an associate professor of drum set studies at a pretty prestigious music school (I’m not going to tell you the name). I went to visit him and he introduced me to some of the other teachers there. I could not believe the attitude of some of these teachers. Many of them were condescending, unfriendly and unwelcoming. They were full of ego and conceit. The environment at the school was negative and competitive. I was shocked.
But it was then that I knew what to do. My school would be the opposite of where my friend worked. BANG would a place where everyone was welcome, where all the teachers would be friendly, helpful, encouraging, enthusiastic and ego-less. My teachers would be amazing drummers and teachers, but if they were not humble and if they did not have that sparkle in their eye when they thought about drumming, they would not be welcome. BANG! The Drum School would be where beginners in particular would feel very comfortable and relaxed.
So, that’s a lot of my story, as it pertains to BANG, anyway. I hope we get the chance to study drumming together.
