Welcome to the latest edition of “Pattern Control,” a way to gain control over complex vocabulary.
Using this method can help you understand complex phrases and how they work in different rhythmic metrics. I’ve written several articles about this idea and you can read more by having a look at the links at the bottom of this article.
The method is simple: write out the pattern until it resolves. That way you can see what the useful bits for different length phrases are.
Since I’ve been getting so much mileage out of “FRLRL,” I thought I’d offer this pattern as 16th note triplets here. The PDF will show you how the pattern plays out over the five measures that it takes to resolve.
Here is the PDF: Pattern Control: FRLRL as 16th Note Triplets
Note: There are no orchestrations indicated on the PDF. You should come up with your own orchestration ideas.
Simply look at the PDF and pick the chunks that will work for your playing. For example, if you wanted a way to play two beats worth of 16th note triplets, try using the first half of the third measure, which is RLFRLR LFRLRL. See how the sticking would set you up to get in and out of the fill easily? That’s the idea behind writing out the patterns in this manner–you might not have thought of playing that otherwise.
I hope you find this helpful. Feel free to let me know your thoughts in the comments below or by emailing me.
