I recently posted a page of 6/8 independence exercises because I noticed that the drumming literature seems to lack good source material to develop triplet based grooves. Along the same lines, here is a sheet that will help develop the independence needed to play a rock shuffle.
“The Funky Primer” is my favorite rock independence book for developing basic facility with the rock/pop eighth note hand ostinato. This worksheet is labeled as a “Funky Primer Extender” because I have converted the first two pages of Dowd’s eighth note bass drum independence exercises into a shuffle format here. I’ve converted the two pages to a shuffle feel and condensed them into a single page. The one page idea makes things easier….just look at each measure of this worksheet as a separate exercise.
